Despite a tight timeline, we completed this ambitious civil construction project for KiwiRail with a day to spare. As the main contractor, our team excavated close to half a million cubic metres of poor clay soil on the 4.4-hectare site of a former large quarry, and installed extensive underfill and subsoil drainage. The main work site was 580 metres long, 85 metres wide and up to 11 metres deep. We delivered the project in strict adherence to the rigorous requirements for compaction, pre-loading and moisture content of fill materials and to exacting geotechnical engineering requirements for the installation of drainage and placement of engineered fill to achieve a flat building site. Auckland Transport’s Wiri Electric Train Depot building with seven electric train maintenance berths, stabling for trains, and six kilometres of rail track sidings today stands on the 40,000 square metre metal platform we built.
